Are you Feeling Stuck in Your Current Role?
If you’re feeling stuck professionally and want to talk about how work is impacting your mental health, it might help to talk to a therapist.
I found inspiration for this blog post during a visit to the South Bay yesterday, where I unexpectedly ended up having lunch at the Visitor Center of a major tech giant in Silicon Valley. The employees exuded enthusiasm as they shared insights into their mission, the innovative building design, the sustainability features incorporated, and the company's commitment to community welfare. It was evident that they took pride in their work and were eager to engage with the community, showcasing the impactful initiatives their company was spearheading.
In therapy, we discuss your work history, the present and what you would like from the future. Topics that we can get into more deeply might include:
What brought you to your field of choice?
What your favorite things are about the work that you do?
How your time is used on a typical day, week, or month?
Who you are interacting with?
What values do you most align with when it comes to work, purpose, and compensation?
What you’re enjoying about your current role?
What you’re not enjoying about your current role?
Jobs/career pathways that you might like and why?
Sometimes individuals can do this on their own without a third party but others need a mentor, peer in their field, or therapist to help provide feedback and check in with them along the way. There is a lot to consider especially when our personal finances are not secure or the economy and other external forces give us pause.
If you’re ready to transition to a new role but not sure you can make the leap yet, consider starting therapy. Therapy may allow you to work through the transition thoughtfully so you can feel content about showing up to work each day and purposeful in your role.
